Quidditch World Cup 2011 Is Here!

I was leery about moving to New York, because it seemed like nothing cool ever happened there. But move I did, and boy am I glad, because on November 12–13, the International Quidditch Association (IQA) will host the 2011 Quidditch World Cup on Randall’s Island in New York City!

This weekend, 95 college quidditch teams will descend on the Big Apple to compete in a live action-packed sporting event based on the popular game in the Harry Potter novels and films. The two-day event will feature 450 games, with live music, entertainers, food and drink vendors and more.

“Muggle quidditch” was adapted by college students in 2005 from JK Rowling’s books and is now played at over 500 schools worldwide. With regular tournaments held all over the US and Canada on a weekly basis, and new events being organized in locations as far away as Australia, quidditch is one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

Both Harvard and Yale have quidditch teams, but my own Alma Mater, Dartmouth, seems to be lacking. What the hell, Dartmouth? Get with the program. You’re turning into Brown.

In the largest display of real-life quidditch ever, over 2,000 college athletes will seek to best each other on 11 fields of continuous play. One hundred teams representing 27 US states and 5 nations will compete, arriving from schools as close as NYU, and as far away as the University of Vassa in Finland. Curiously absent are the Brits. What the hell, UK? Get with the program. You’re turning into Dartmouth.

Between and during the games, spectators will experience a diverse array of entertainers and performances, including live music from over a dozen bands, culminating in a headline concert Saturday night. Oo, I hope it’s the Weird Sisters!

Tickets start at $4.99 and are available online or at the event. That’s shockingly reasonable. I almost with it were more expensive, to keep the kids away.
