Celebrated and revered as the best graphic novel of our time, Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons is a modern classic. If you’ve been in outer space for the past couple of years, you might not know there’s a long-awaited movie adaptation premiering March 6. But don’t feel bad if you didn’t know that. Personally, I had never read Watchmen myself until recently. So, just in case I’m not the only one, I thought we’d all read it (or re-read it) together before the movie comes out. I’m going to be re-reading it, too, paying closer attention to the LGBT characters and issues raised in the book.
This time you have a whole month to buy, borrow or steal the book and read it before the discussion starts in the Forum on Wednesday, March 4. That gives us a couple of days to discuss before the movie opens. Then we’ll be able to discuss the movie and its relationship to the source material. I just did a quick check on Amazon, and used copies start around $10.00, while a brand new copy goes for $11.99. If you want to go that route, just click on the Amazon link to the right to buy your copy! Most larger libraries should have it as well, though it’s probably a popular selection right now. Finally, our devoted Book Buddy Marc will be along for the ride this time, too, to provide literary motivation and inspiration to us all.
And remember, “The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists, and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout, ‘Read Watchmen!’ And I’ll look down and whisper, ‘Sure! That sounds like fun!’”
