Aww…I was still holding out hope for Jon Hamm. Alas, Zack Snyder had another cable TV star in mind. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill (The Tudors, Stardust) has won the role of the Man of Steel himself: Superman.
In typical PR speak, Zack Snyder stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
Zack Snyder, of course, is the man who brought us 300 and Watchmen, both of which proudly celebrated the beauty of male flesh, whether Spartan or Doctor Manhattan, so I hope that means we can count on the big guy appearing in his traditional blue tights and red underwear. Henry Cavill is certainly nice to look at, so I hope they don’t bury him in armor or some CGI silliness. Looking around the net, I mainly found recent photos of him from his role on The Tudors, so it’s hard to picture him as a modern day Clark Kent sort of fellow.
Still, I’m reserving judgment until I learn a little more about the guy and maybe watch some of his previous work. And see him in a pair of tights.
Superman: Man of Steel is scheduled for a December 2012 release.
