Geekmas 2011: Day 12

Welcome to FBOTU‘s second annual 12 Days of Geekmas and the 12th and final selection in our special gift guide! What is Geekmas, you ask? What is Geekmas? Why, it’s only the most magical time of the year, when geeky children of all ages get what’s coming to them! So, for 12 delirious days, Fanboys of the Universe will help you find the perfect gift for the special fanboy or fangirl in your life. Or for yourself. You should definitely buy something nice for yourself, because—hey—you’ve been very good and/or naughty this year, and both behaviors deserve a little reward now and then, don’t you think?

FBOTU’s 12 Days of Geekmas
Day 12: Walter from The Muppets

image

The 411
From obscurity to overnight success, Walter is the newest Muppet super star! A die-hard fan of the Muppets who made his electrifying debut in the new movie, Walter stands 18” tall and is a very manly Muppet. While he may not have the real Walter’s whistling talent, he’s still soft and cuddly and fully capable of saving the Muppet Theater from an evil oil baron. You can find Walter at your local Disney Store for $16.50. (You can also find me at your local Disney Store for around $3.50.)

Geekmas Karma
By now, you know everyone here at FBOTU loves the Muppets. It’s a seriously deep affliction, so trust me when I tell you how you’re going to win Geekmas with Walter. First, invite the Muppet fan in your life to attend a screening of the new movie with you. Bring Walter along in a backpack or shopping bag. After the credits roll, hand your Muppet paramour this adorable Walter plush, sit back and receive lots and lots of kisses and hugs. You are awesome. But why stop at Walter? It’s Geekmas, after all! You know what you need? More frogs and dogs and bears and chickens and… and whatever!

Day 11: Doctor Who TARDIS Console Room Mega Building Set

image

The 411
Customizable options and over 600 pieces mean unlimited Time Lord fun! You can build the Eleventh Doctor’s iconic vehicle with this highly detailed construction playset that features the TARDIS interior console room and an exterior with an alien-world landscape. This awesome set also includes four Doctor Who micro-figures: the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond, Rory Williams and River Song!

Geekmas Karma
You could certainly give this impressive set to the Doctor Who or Lego fan in your life. That would certainly be nice of you. But wouldn’t it also be nice to set aside a Saturday afternoon, watch a marathon of Doctor Who episodes and build and customize your very own TARDIS? How about tossing Rory, Amy and the Doctor out the window and give River Song the spin-off she so richly deserves? This is the season of giving and sharing, though, so you could also invite some friends over, or maybe just that one special someone, and make it a collaborative project. I think the Doctor would approve.

Day 10: Gay Comics for $4.99 from Northwest Press

image

The 411
Northwest Press is lowering the price on all their graphic novels available through Apple’s iBooks for a limited time! For just over a week—from December 21 through December 30—every title will be priced at just $4.99 in the US and Canada, and 3.99 GBP in the UK. That’s a savings of up to 65% off the regular price! Sale titles include:

Jon Macy’s Teleny and Camille, an adaptation of an anonymous Victorian erotic novel attributed to Oscar Wilde
Justin Hall’s Glamazonia: The Uncanny Super-Tranny, a collection of tales about a hard-drinking, sexy superheroine with a bad attitude
David Kelly’s Rainy Day Recess: The Complete Steven’s Comics, a complete collection of the 90s newspaper strips with a foreword by “It Gets Better” founder Dan Savage
Rick Worley’s A Waste of Time, the first full-length collection of Worley’s semi-autobiographical webcomics about a misanthropic, sex-obsessed bunny
Tim Fish’s Cavalcade of Boys Volume One, a collection of Fish’s soapy and sweet gay romance series

Geekmas Karma
This sale is insane! If you pass up this opportunity to get some amazing LGBT comics at an amazing price, then the Geekmas Angels themselves will weep glittery tears of despair for you. Seriously, this special deal makes it super easy for you to give Northwest Press ebooks as gifts or try them out for yourself. They look amazing on the iPad, have really great browsing and bookmarking features, and a few even include material not found in the print editions. Even if you don’t have an iPad, odds are you know someone who does. Plus, you know these artists. We’ve featured Jon Macy, Justin Hall, Tim Fish and publisher Zan Christensen on the site. And we’ll be taking a look at David Kelly and Rick Worley in upcoming features, so don’t miss out on this deal. Having read every single one of these titles, I can assure you that you and whoever else you buy them for are going to love them. Spread the word!

Day 9: Star Wars Lightsaber Candlestick

image

The 411
Produced exclusively for ThinkGeek, each of these Star Wars Lightsaber Candlesticks is a precise scaled down re-creation of Darth Vader’s blade, cast in zinc-alloy and chrome plated. Three no-drip red taper candles are included, but most standard taper candles will fit the candlestick properly. The circular base unscrews to provide a more authentic look to the saber hilt for the true Star Wars collector. Only $29.99 at ThinkGeek.

Geekmas Karma
Celebrate the Festival of Lights with lightsabers! This is one of those gifts that can satisfy a lot of people on your list. In addition to being a great Hanukkah gift, it can also satisfy the Star Wars fan in your life, or make a classy, yet fun hostess gift. All of which make these the perfect gift to have on hand, just in case.

Day 8: Spoiler Alert: Bruce Willis Is Dead and 399 More Endings from Movies, TV, Books and Life by Robb Pearlman

image

The 411
In today’s world of short attention spans and long Netflix queues, everyone’s looking for the easy way out, even in entertainment. If you think reading all 400 pages, watching all 120 minutes, or waiting for the ending is just too much, have I got the book for you! All the spoilers in this succinct, informative and hilarious collection come from all the classic movies, shows and books that everyone knows or needs to know. It’s your literary, cinematic and pop culture CliffsNotes (but so much funnier). It’s the perfect book for everyone who reads the last page of a book first. And it’s only $10 on Amazon.

Geekmas Karma
In addition to being an editor of numerous pop culture and entertainment titles and the author of The Q Guide to Sex and the City, Robb Pearlman was also our hilarious True Blood guru and recapper from this past summer. So, buying his book is totally supporting one of our own! Plus, Spoiler Alert makes a great gift for the movie or pop culture fan in your life. Somehow, I know about half a dozen hosts of pub trivia nights, and they’re going to LOVE this book. I’m also tempted to get my mother a copy, so we can actually carry on a conversation about a movie made in the past 30 years. So, support Robb, get an awesome book and thrill and delight your friends this holiday season!

P.S. You can read all Robb’s uproarious True Blood recaps here.

Day 7: Diesel DC Underwear

image

The 411
Diesel describes their new line of DC-inspired underpants thusly: “Never before have super powers been so close to your skin.” To this, I say, “You don’t know me, Diesel. You don’t know my life.” These cool skivvies are understated, as superhero underpants go, which is pretty cool. You never know how guys will react when you drop trou and a bright red and gold Superman emblem is emblazoned upon your crotch. The Diesel line will certainly be recognizable to those in the know, but subtle enough not to scare away any potential non-geek suitors. Win-win. Choose from Batman, Green Lantern, Flash or the Joker. The Joker, of course, isn’t exactly a hero. Or maybe he’s your hero. I’m not judging you. Check ‘em out here.

image

Geekmas Karma
For $30-$35 per pair, they’re not the cheapest stocking stuffers ever, but they will make you a big hit on Geekmas morn. Gifting underwear can be very sexy, especially if he tries them on and models them for you. Or, if you want to be a little more playful, get a pair for yourself and let him “unwrap” you before you give him his. Whew! Is it getting hot in here?

Day 6: Wonder Woman #600 Limited Edition Statue

image

The 411
Based on the art of Don Kramer and sculpted by Jack Mathews, this limited edition cold-cast porcelain statue beautifully captures a new vision of the Amazon Princess. If they had released this statue prior to the re-design of the costume and the launch of Wonder Woman #600, I think the fan reaction would have been very different. The statue is hand-painted and measures approximately 9.75” high x 4.75” wide x 3.75” deep. The Wonder Woman #600 statue retails for around $100.

Geekmas Karma
As you know, it’s customary to have a Wonder Woman selection in the 12 Days of Geekmas every year. That’s a Geekmas tradition going back centuries. Honor the Amazon Princess and all she means to our people and make sure she’s represented in your gift-giving, decorations or carols this holiday season. Some of my personal favorites include “Good Princess of Themyscira,” “I’m Dreaming of Bullets and Bracelets” and, of course, “Artemis, the Bloody-Nosed Amazon.”

Day 5: Somethin’ Good by Samantha Newark

image

The 411
Most people know Samantha Newark as the speaking voice of Jem, the iconic 80s animated character. What most people don’t know is that Ms. Newark is a seasoned singer in her own right. Somethin’ Good combines a number of electronic styles into a coherent whole, stocked top to bottom with melodic hooks, jumping synths and a sly, winking humor. Retro harmonies mesh effortlessly with a future-forward attitude that practically leaps from the speakers. More than anything, the album sounds sincere, the product of an artist who knows what she wants. (From Johnny M’s review of Somethin’ Good. Read the full review here.)

Geekmas Karma
You are going to love this album. Everyone you give it to is going to love this album. I’ve been listening to it on a loop since October, and I can’t get enough of it. So, whether you have a Jem fan in your life or a music lover who’s impossible to buy for, you’re going to be a holiday hero when you give them Samantha Newark’s Somethin’ Good. Plus, it’s perfect party music, so it makes a great hostess gift or soundtrack for your New Year’s Eve bash. Somethin’ Good is available on iTunes and at samanthanewark.com.

Day 4: The Star Wars Craft Book

image

The 411
Give in to the power of the crafty side! With The Star Wars Craft Book, fans of all ages and skill levels can bring the best of the galaxy far, far away right into their own homes and craft rooms. Make and play with finger puppets of your favorite cantina characters. Spruce up your space with Chewbacca tissue box covers and a Jabba the Hutt body pillow. Or celebrate festive occasions with Wookiee pumpkins, Hanukkah droidels or a Star Wars action figure wreath. It’s a blast! Or, as Admiral Ackbar would say, “It’s a craft!”

Geekmas Karma
If you’re crafty, it’s the perfect way to merge your geekiness with your craftiness. Or, if you’re like me and have no discernible skills or talents of any kind, you can gift it to a crafty person in your life and hope they make you some stuff. In fact, if someone out there will promise to knit me an R2-D2 beanie, I’ll give you the book! How awesome is that?! God bless us, every one. And by “God,” I mean George Lucas.

Day 3: Archer: The Complete Second Season on Blu-ray/DVD

image

The 411
Sterling Archer, the world’s most dangerous spy, and his snarky ISIS cohorts are back for another outrageous season when Archer: The Complete Second Season comes to Blu-ray and DVD on December 27 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Loaded with three exclusive top-secret animated shorts, the DVD features all 13 episodes, plus hilarious never-before-seen extras. When he’s not busy foiling eco-terrorist threats, tracking down mysterious killers or having sex in x-ray machines, the suave master-spy has his hands full with bikini-clad ninjas, Swiss nymphomaniacs and paternity suits. Archer searches for the true identity of his father, battles breast cancer and brings a sexy, ex-KGB agent home to meet his domineering mother. A must-have for Archer fans or anyone who appreciates clever writing, subversive humor and great voice casts.

Geekmas Karma
This comes out on December 27, just after Christmas, which gives you the perfect excuse if you find you’ve forgotten someone on your list, or if your first gift choice wasn’t the big hit you were hoping for. “Don’t worry! You have another gift on the way!” Plus, pair this with the first season, curl up by the fire and play the Archer drinking game until all the leftover egg nog is gone. Remember, drink twice whenever Pam sexually harasses someone; and three times for whenever Archer is naked. Enjoy!

Day 2: World of Warcraft Tabards

image

The 411
For the Alliance! (Or Horde, I guess, if you’re evil and like to lose.) Inspired by World of Warcraft, you can now show your true colors wherever you go by wearing these exciting life-sized tabards! The artisans at Windlass Studios worked closely with the creative team at Blizzard Entertainment to bring each amazing piece to life. The tabards are made of 100% heavy weave cotton, then are custom dyed, embroidered and intricately silk screened with the most iconic symbols and heraldry from the game. The tabards measure 17” x 47” and have full linen lining, so they won’t snag on your chain mail. Your days of fretting over what to wear to your office holiday party are over! The tabards are normally around $80, but you can snag them on sale at Entertainment Earth for around $30-$35. (The Horde tabard is cheaper, obviously.)

Geekmas Karma
Just imagine his surprise when you walk into the bedroom on Christmas Eve, wearing nothing but your World of Warcraft tabard. Get one for both of you, check into an inn, order up some ale and celebrate your latest quest. Or get one of each and dabble in the ultimate taboo.

Day 1: The Walking Dead Board Game

The 411
In The Walking Dead Board Game, only the strong survive. Fight your way through zombie-infested Atlanta with your fellow survivors. If you can make it back to camp with enough gear to defend yourself and those you still care for, you win! However, should you fall prey to the hungry horde of walkers, don’t worry; the game doesn’t end there! When a player dies and becomes a walker, they can then spring surprise attacks on the living, cause the walkers to frenzy or contaminate the survivor’s supplies. Take that, Lori! Put the bite on your former friends, and they’ll join you in your pursuit of the living. (Just don’t ask them to help you look for Sophia.) The Walking Dead Board Game retails for around $40.

image

Geekmas Karma
The zombie fanboy in your life has some time to kill before The Walking Dead returns in February, so why not make the waiting game an actual game? Invite your friends over and satisfy your hunger for flesh-hungry ghouls and the survivors who love them. Even though it’s just a board game, you can pretty much guarantee there’ll be more action in one game than in all of season two so far! So, make it a party! Serve finger foods and mystery meats. Who knows? By the end of the evening, you might just have a certain zombie enthusiast nibbling at your neck.
